you're taking a look at live pictures right there on your screen. she's bringing monster waves and high winds. authorities are taking chances. more than 2 million students in 9 states are out of school today. and federal offices in washington have been shut down. we're going to have more on sandy in just a minute. first, home town heroes got to show you the cover of the san francisco chronicle this morning. giant's sweep. >> i went like this cause it looks like it's still hot off the presses. that's going to be a keepsake. a lot of people will have that in a drawer. the giants won the world series for the second time in three years. the team completed the world series sweep last night winning 4-3 in ten innings. while most of the celebrations here in san francisco were peaceful. some did turn violent.

a number of fires were set in the streets of the mission district. kate joins us live with more on the messthat's being cleaned up this morning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. i want to show you there's still aftermath from last night. piles of debris still here on the street that crews are working to clean up as last night's celebrations turned to mayhem. officers tried to disperse thousands of fans flooding the streets. some set small fires to trash cans, couches and news paper wracks. officers told a group of fans they were unlawfully assembling and needed to leave. take a look here, this is chopper 5. we heard reports that some firefighters needed to be escorted by officers in order to put out the flames. the clean up is already beginning here. again, the celebrations will continue but there's still aftermath here that needs to be

swept up this morning. as far as arrests, we were able to confirm one arrest has been made. but that number could rise. more information later this morning. live in the mission district, cbs 5. >> check it out. not all the celebrations in san francisco turned violent. fans around at&t park. they were mostly peaceful. thousands of fans gathered to watch the game on a jumbotron. the crowd went wild. >> feels good, man. two series in three years. >> we did it! yeah! >> oh, my god, this is amazing. we deserve this win . this is great. go giants! >> there were fire works in san francisco and all over the bay area to mark the win. chestnut street in the city was another place fans gathered to cheer on

the giants. hundreds of people gathered there for a peaceful but loud celebration. >> and for good reason. and for the first time, giants had to come from behind last night for the victory. they were tied up in the 10th. ryan was on second. after he singled and marco delivering a two out hit. gave giants a 4-3 lead. that was your game winner. and surgio took care of the tigers 1, 2, 3 in the bottom of the 10th. winning 4 games to 3. >> couldn't be prouder of these guys. to be world champions and two out of the last three years, it's amazing. >> and then the champaign. the giants will fly out of detroit in about three hours. i don't think they went to bed. they arrive at san francisco at 3:00 this afternoon. i'm sure there will be a few people waiting there. and the celebration will

continue through wednesday where san francisco holds a parade. start at market street and wind its way to civic center plaza. for all things giants we have you covered including championship and world series gear. head to our web site cbssf.com/giants. >> right now firefighter rz battling a fire in san jose. this is a warehouse in the almadon area. 19600 almadon road. it is a big fire. not clear what started this fire. we will continue to monitor the situation and bring you as much information as soon as it comes in. >> hurricane sandy continues to move toward the east coast. expected to combine with two other storm systems and already prompted shut downs of schools, financial markets and mass transit. we have team coverage of the storm and affects. lawrence is in our weather

center. alis sashgs is at sfo. and first let's go to susan on the coast of delaware. good morning, susan. >> reporter: good morning. we are here on the coast. i don't know if you can really get a sense of the size of the waves here. but they have covered the beach here and enkroech on the board walk. this is 12 to 18 hours before the brunt of this storm is supposed to hit land. folks here have emptied out from this area and other coastal areas and headed for safety. >> conditions along the coast have been steadily getting worse. >> the ocean's angry right now and we're going to see a storm surge. >> sandy is massive. hurricane force winds extend out 175 miles from the storm's eye. >> look at these huge waves up to 40 feet east and south of the main center. that's why we're so concerned about the storm surge. >> officials say time is running out to get to safety.

>> you better do what they say because the ocean really shows you no mercy. >> as hurricane sandy moves in, many folks in beach areas have moved out heeding the mandatory evacuation warnings. how much damage this storm will do and if they are ready. >> i don't think people are prepared for the storm as they should be. >> her brother is a meteorologist. >> he says don't underestimate. >> further up the coast, officials predict a storm surge of 11 feet. could hit new york city. >> mandatory evacuation for this zone. >> 375,000 new yorkers have been ordered to evacuate flood proned lower manhattan. >> we have two little kids and pack our stuff and leave. >> airlines have canceled thousands of flights scheduled for today. >> i'm trying to get to greensboro, north carolina. >> president obama toured fema

and said the federal government is standing by to provide any assistance it can. >> the president has left orlando and canceled a rally headed back to the white house to help deal with the affects of this storm. the evacuation order took place here last night. people filling gas cans and generators. slowly moving out of town. >> i can imagine. there were massive power outages expected before this storm hit. i can see lights behind you but are you hearing about any outages so far where you are? >> oh, yes. there's still power here but there are power outages expected and rolling blackouts on purpose. added extra crews and clearing trees and clear the power lines. the worry is once this water really starts to pile up that it saturates the ground and trees will go down and a lot of folks here need to be

prepared for many days without power. >> thank you for that report and be careful out there. thank you. >> if you are planning to fly to the northeast today or tomorrow you are probably out of luck. all flights have been canceled for the next 48 hours, boston, jfk, new york and philadelphia. i would imagine some disappointed travelers there today; right? >> reporter: you bet. that storm is getting ready to hit the east coast but travelers will feel an impact. thousands of flights have been canceled. many of them to and from sfo. they include all flights to and from boston, jfk, nowork, baltimore and washington d.c. jet blue has canceled red-eye flights to jfk tonight. also canceled some flights at other airports in the bay area.

flying out of the oakland airport, flight 90 to jfk have been canceled. san jose 472 to boston and 174 to jfk. travelers are being advised to check flight status well ahead of time. if your flight is canceled, do not come to the airport. call the airline or go online to make changes. cbs 5. >> all right. thanks very much. crazy. >> it is . we're going to check in with lawrence. it's amazing to see these images. >> we're going to see a lot of the devastation. many many problems as it moves on shore. we're already seeing those waves piling up on the coastline. that is one of the big concerns. this is going to be near the eye of the hurricane to pass slightly to the south of that right now. that's the latest track. a lot of devastation

possible in this area. but maybe even a larger storm surge into new york. some of those swells making their way on shore. only going to get worse in the next 12 to 24 hours as the storm system approaches the coastline. the big concern is it's coming on right along with high tide and we've got a full moon. the combination could be the big problem. that's going to lift the water up high and we're expecting such a large storm system. it is not the strongest hurricane we've ever seen. a category 1 sustained winds at 85 miles per hour. but the winds sustaining. hurricane force 175 miles out. tropical storm force out 500 miles. you are talking about a wide path of possible destruction early tomorrow morning. after that, start to lose energy and make its way up toward maine. otherwise, this is going to be some kind of story. we have a

dense fog advisory in affect. inside the basobe careful traveling early on. a lot of folks are sleeping in this morning after the giant's victory. i think as we head throughout the day, a lot of sunshine by the afternoon. should be pleasant. maybe not quite as warm as yesterday but it will be nice. temperatures moving up into the 60s and 70s in many spots. maybe low 80s in the interior valley. chance of rain does make return on halloween. maybe showers into thursday. dry weather returns after that. let's check out the roadways. >> you mentioned it. a lot of people are sleeping in. pretty quiet on the roadways so far. here's a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. usually takes while for things to get going anyway. you will see fog in the distance. we're seeing it in a lot of traffic cameras this morning. going to our maps, here's a live look at our traffic sensors. you may notice a little bit of a delay on the

northbound 280 extension. king street is shut down this morning until about 6:00 in the morning between 4th and at&t park. just a heads up you can use northbound 280 king street off ramp but make you take a left at 4th to get back on to the embarcadero. one of our time-saver traffic cameras. 880 through oakland. you can see the headlights making way southbound. looks good past oakland. you may find road work through downtown oakland. here's a live look at the golden gate bridge where the fog is thick this morning. you notice that drive time heavy as well on southbound 101 from 580 towards the toll plaza. on going paving work. so just a heads up. give yourself extra time. you know it if you commute every morning.

go ahead and try and count l these well if you are wishing you were back in bed right now, this isn't going to help you. try and count all these sheep making their way through madrid, spain. the 2500 sheep are led by farmers to get the sheep to warmer grazing areas. quite a spectacle there. >> they have a traffic reporter, that would not be a good thing. >> i don't think so. >> i guess you have issues because some of the rebellers last night. >> spain has sheep and we have giants. causing a few problems on the roadway. they've shut

down that area around at&t park. king street is closed between 4th coming off of 280 and the ballpark. you can use that 280 extension. you can use the king street off ramp but you are going to be forced to make a hard left on 4th. and use that to loop around and get back on to the embarcadero. king street should be reopened by 6:00 this morning. we'll let you know as soon as we find out. in the meantime, mission street, they are also doing some street sweeping, cleaning around that area cause of all the excitement there last night. here's a live look at our sensors. westbound highway 4 not too bad. a little bit of slowing. a few break lights and once you get past those exits, everything looks good. so drive times are pretty much free and clear this morning. lawrence said it earlier, people are sleeping in this morning.

pretty much no major hot spots. a few areas of road work but not much. westbound 24 still cruising all the way down through the maze. 15 minutes between the pass and the dublin inter change. that is a check of your time-saver traffic. i know lawrence has been busy this morning monitoring the storm on the east coast and foggy here. >> a little fog around the bay area. they have bigger trouble toward the eastern sea board. if you are headed outside right now, watch out for dense fog early on around the bay and out toward the coastline. temperatures in the 50s. by the afternoon, the fog will lift in most spots. sunny and mild day inside the bay. 50s and 60s. 70s and low 80 s inland. and 60s out toward the coastline. fog continuing to linger there. storm clouds making their way in the pacific northwest. we are staying dry for now and things

will shift gears. could pay a visit to the bay area late on wednesday. not too bad. morning clouds, lots of sunshine. around the country, a different story. this is clear into houston. okay into denver. chicago 50 degrees. new york, canceled a lot of flights there. very stormy conditions as hurricane sandy moves on shore. temperatures up into the 70s this afternoon. a lot of 60s out toward the coastline. low 80s and places like liver more. 79 in brentwood. as you make your way inside the bay, 70 in oakland. 60 in san francisco. next couple days, things begin to switch gears a bit. storm clouds could move in late in the day. showers into shurs as well. that's a look at weather. back to you. >> police in oakland are very busy investigating four shootings all happened within 6

hours. the first happened just after 5:00 yesterday afternoon. the only death at this point is from the latest shooting around 10:40 last night around 9th avenue. victims of the first three shootings hospitalized. the first two in critical condition. >> california highway patrol will start deploying officers to help police in the cities of oakland and stockton. increase patrols in high crime areas. violent crime has been on the rise in both cities. the ch p is looking into the possibility of federal funds to help offset the cost. a water emergency is over on treasure island. the water stopped flowing when a water main break happened friday night. they still recommended boiling water before drinking it. now the water is safe but people should flush pipes before using it. soda tax is up for discussion at a town hall meeting tonight. the mayor as

can. >> the president has left orlando headed back to the white house to deal with the storm there. frank and michelle. >> all right. susan live for us in delaware. thank you. >> and disruption of air travel extends all the way to the bay air. at sfo all flights departing and arriving from 6 eastern airports have been canceled for the next 48 hours. boston, jfk and philadelphia. alisa is at sfo with more. >> good morning. travellers are sleeping in airports because so many flights have been canceled and even though the storm is getting ready to hit the east coast, travellers here will feel the impact. all flights to and from boston, jfk, nowerk, philly, baltimore and washington d.c. canceled for the next 48 hours. jet blue has

canceled red-eye flights to jfk to boston tonight and tomorrow nights. and some flights to the bay area. flying out of the oakland airport, flight 90 to jfk and 318 have been canceled. 472 to boston and flight 174 to jfk. here at sfo, i got a chance to go inside and talk to some of the people at virgin america. one of the airlines that have a lot of canceled flights. they sent out an e-mail blast and phone blast to their customers and able to reschedule everybody. inside we haven't seen too many stranded people this morning but we're going to head back in and talk to people trying to get to the east coast. even though this storm could only last a couple days. some of these flights people can't get a new one for at least a week. back to you. >> thank you. >> if you look at the satellite imagery of this storm, goes from

the carolinas all the way up into new england. >> we haven't seen something like this in a long time. >> maybe since the 1950s with wilma. this one a category 1. but still a very dangerous and potentially devastating storm system as it makes its way toward the eastern sea board. watch as it moves up along the coastline. at the very end, you'll notice it starts to jog to the left. that's the turn we've been waiting for on shore a little later on into tomorrow morning. sustained winds of 85 miles per hour. it's not the strength of the storm system. it's the size. hurricane forced winds extending 175 miles out from the core. tropical storm force winds almost 500 miles. we're talking about a large area of possible devastation. all the heavy rainfall and the storm surge could be the beg problem. when this moves on shore, you have new york in the right front quadrant of the storm.

we could see a storm surge 8 maybe 11 feet through new york harbor. if that happens, that would be devastating. starts to lose more of its characteristics. 24 to 36 hours, some kind of storm making its way on shore. devastating along the eastern sea board. around our area, dense fog. visibility down to a quarter of a mile. by the afternoon, we should see plenty of sunshine. more on that coming up. let's check on the roadways. >> a lot of that fog can be seen in a lot of traffic cameras. here's a live look. clear across this stretch . the right side of the screen, that is your commute direction. drive time 14 minutes between hayward and foster city. elsewhere to our maps, with the giant's big win, it is impacting the morning drive in and around san francisco. that area right around at&t park is shut down between 4th and the ballpark.

her shoulder left behind. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. you are exactly right . there are officers still here on scene. and there is that pile of debris, one of many along this stretch. we saw an officer put down a flair so people driving could see there was a pile of debris on the road. take a look at the violence from last night. thousands of fans spilled on to the streets just after the game. now, some fans started setting small fires to trash cans, couches, signs and newspaper racks. police were dressed in full riot gear. firefighters had been escorted to fight these fires. if you see from chopper 5. you can see the flames from up high. just before 1:00 this morning, there were still fans out here at 16th and mission. officers had to tell them they were unlawfully assembling and needed to leave. back out live here, that pile of debris is just a reminder there's still a lot of clean up to be done here

absentee voting requirements. early voting has been canceled for today in washington d.c. and maryland. >> and here's a fascinating look at hurricane sandy. looks like the moon doesn't it? nasa provided this time lapse video of the storm as it turns off the var line acoastline. the -- carolina coastline. amtrak has suspended service across the northeast and i've talked to a number of friends out in boston. there is no school from new york all the way up to maine for the most part. >> a lot of people are going out and buying generators having fridges stocked. i was texting you yesterday about this storm. >> looks like something. going to be some kind of storm. happens to coincide with the high tide. could be a devastating storm for the east coast. here in the bay area, starting out with thick fog. dense fog advisory continuing along the coastline and inside
